SOMM RECORDINGS is pleased to announce Dreams Melting, a revealing survey of British songs from the early 20th century by tenor James Geer and pianist Ronald Woodley.

Spanish Songs for Soprano & Guitar

The collection of music on this enjoyable disc is either arranged from original folk sources or originally composed for soprano and guitar. It covers a somewhat surprisingly wide-ranging degree of expressive content for female voice and the six-stringed acoustic guitar. In this way, we are drawn into a more personal, intimate mode of expression, which speaks to a small, select, group of listeners, and which, in its natural mode returns to its folk-based roots.

Piano Music by Billy Mayerl Vol. II

Philip Martin, piano

The success of Volume One of The Piano Music of Billy Mayerl with Philip Martin has shown that in addition to older listeners, there is  now a new generation eager to discover Mayerl’s brilliantly written piano  music.

“This is the first volume in a series in which the sequels cannot arrive too soon. The principal joy resides in Billy Mayerl’s music – British piano pieces that are syncopated and melodious… Martin (he is joy number two) leaps through the repertoire with clean and infectious élan”  BBC Music Magazine, July 2013 **** (on Volume One, SOMMCD 0124)

Samuel Barber: Piano Music

Leon McCawley, piano

Last November marked SOMM’s first release in our planned series of recordings with the distinguished pianist Leon McCawley. His recital of Chopin Piano Music (SOMMCD 0103) released last November, was warmly received.

The second CD in this series which, apart from one or two very early pieces has the complete Piano Music by Samuel Barber, is a brand new recording for SOMM and is as it happens,  Leon McCawley’s second recording of the composer’s piano music to which, he has, incidentally, added more pieces. His first recording was for Virgin EMI back in 1997.

Piano Music by John Ireland Vol. 2

Volume 2 contains one of Ireland’s undeniable masterpieces – Sarnia: An Island Sequence which is Ireland’s evocation of, and tribute to Guernsey, an island where he had achieved possibly the greatest happiness and contentedness in his life.

Works for Piano and Orchestra by Arnold Bax and John Ireland

SOMM has achieved a spectacular coup with the first-ever recording of Bax’s Concertino for Piano & Orchestra. The CD was recorded last April and  this work also had its world premiere performance last July with The Orchestra of the Swan and Mark Bebbington,  to critical acclaim.

Mátyás Seiber – Choral Music A Cappella

This new SOMM release, Mátyás Seiber’s Music a cappella is a delightful collection of choral music written by a composer of great talent who died tragically early and at the height of his powers. The disc is certain to become a favourite among those of us who love choral music as well as amateur and professional choirs not only in the UK, Seiber’s adopted home, but also in every part of the world where choirs enjoy discovering new and challenging repertoire.
