It is with great pleasure and pride that we are now able to release this disc, a rare collection of solo recordings in tribute to Phyllis Sellick, the much-loved pianist and teacher who died in May of 2007.
Phyllis Sellick – Piano
With her death, a strong and important link with the British musical life from the mid-20th century has been broken. However, her legacy lives on in her recordings, the musical compositions that she inspired and pioneered, and in the work of her students dotted around the world.
Phyllis Sellick’s main characteristic as a performer was her great clarity and impeccable technique. She was not only a profoundly gifted musician but she also learnt and absorbed new scores quickly. Her remarkable technique made her a firm favourite of several British composers. She performed Vaughan Williams’s incidental music for the film 49th Parallel (1941) and premiered Michael Tippett’s First Piano Sonata and subsequent recording for Rymington Van Wyck, in the presence of the composer.
